The Big Picture

Pregnancy after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death can bring hope alongside grief, anxiety, and uncertainty. A new Intermountain Health clinic is bringing specialized medical care and emotional support together for families navigating a pregnancy after loss.

What’s Happening

The Intermountain Pregnancy After Loss Clinic at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is the ninth clinic to join the United States Pregnancy After Loss (USPAL) network. The clinic provides tailored, trauma-informed care that brings together enhanced support, coordinated care, and specialized expertise.

Caregivers complete training designed to help them respond sensitively to families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. The clinic also offers in-person and virtual consultations to support patients and providers across a broader geographic area.

Why It Matters

Pregnancy loss is more common than many people realize: more than 20,000 pregnancies end in stillbirth each year in the United States, and approximately one in four women will experience pregnancy loss during their lifetime.

The clinic recognizes that the emotional effects of loss can continue into a future pregnancy. Care plans are tailored to each family and emphasize emotional well-being, mental health support, and connections with peers who have faced similar experiences.

That perspective is personal for senior practice manager Liz Hernandez, who experienced the loss of one of her twins and later navigated a pregnancy after loss. She brings her experience as a parent into caregiver training and patient care.

The Bottom Line

Intermountain Health’s Pregnancy After Loss Clinic aims to help families feel informed, supported, and understood throughout their pregnancy journey. The clinic also plans to share training and resources across Intermountain Health and participate in research focused on pregnancy and infant loss.
