The Big Picture
University of Utah Health is moving forward with plans for a new Redwood Health Center on Salt Lake City’s west side. Following approval from the University of Utah Board of Trustees, the health system can acquire approximately 14 acres in the Power District from Larry H. Miller Real Estate.
The proposed facility will replace the existing Redwood Health Center with a larger, more modern health care destination—keeping care close to the communities U of U Health has served for decades.
What’s Happening
The planned health center will be located at 50 N. Redwood Road, between Interstate 80 and North Temple. The existing Redwood Health Center at 1525 W. 2100 S. will continue serving patients while plans for the new facility move forward.
U of U Health initially explored expanding the current building. As planning progressed, leaders determined that building a new, larger facility would offer the strongest long-term opportunity to meet the community’s needs.
Starting from the ground up will allow U of U Health to expand services, update patient care spaces, improve accessibility and create more effective workflows for care teams. The location will also provide better proximity to public transportation, including UTA’s Redwood Road bus service and TRAX Green Line stations along North Temple.
The health center will be part of the Power District, a planned 100-plus-acre mixed-use development that will bring together housing, offices, retail, public gathering spaces and expanded access to the Jordan River.
Why It Matters
For west-side residents, the project represents a continued investment in access to care close to home.
“This is a unique opportunity to reimagine how we provide care to an important community in the Salt Lake Valley and design a health center specifically around the needs of today’s patients, families and care teams,” said Gina Hawley, chief operating officer of U of U Health Hospitals and Clinics and associate chief operating officer for U of U Health.
The project is also part of U of U Health’s broader effort to bring care closer to Utah’s growing communities. Other investments include the Eccles Health Campus & Eccles Hospital under construction in West Valley City, the new Huntsman Cancer Institute under construction in Vineyard and a potential future health campus at The Point. The Redwood Health Center project does not change the plans or timelines for those projects.
“Redwood Health Center is an important investment in Salt Lake City’s west side,” said Brad Holmes, president of Larry H. Miller Real Estate. “We’re proud to partner with University of Utah Health on a project that will improve quality of life and serve this community for years to come.”
The Bottom Line
Board approval marks an important step toward a new Redwood Health Center designed to serve Salt Lake City’s west side for years to come.
Planning remains in its early stages. Details about construction, services, operations and an anticipated opening date will be shared as they are finalized. In the meantime, patients can continue receiving care at the existing Redwood Health Center.
