The Big Picture

For many people living with chronic disease, disability, or recovering from a major health event, exercise can be intimidating ,or even unsafe, without the right support. And for patients who are underserved, the financial and physical barriers to participating in community wellness programs can be especially high.

That’s where supervised, medically informed wellness programming can change what’s possible: creating a safe place to build strength, confidence, and long-term health while meeting patients where they are.

What’s Happening

The L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center / Supervised Medical Gym is a collaboration with the University of Utah College of Health physical therapy program. At the center’s new location, patients with medical conditions that may require assistance to exercise have access to a dedicated gym designed specifically for supervised movement and wellness.

Physical therapists and exercise physiologists work together, alongside a team of students, to support patients as they engage in movement that improves their health. The program also gives students hands-on experience working with a broad range of conditions and abilities.

In this story, University of Utah students and staff share what it’s like to learn, serve, and grow in an environment where patients and future healthcare professionals are building capability together.

Why It Matters

The supervised medical gym model fills a critical gap between clinical care and “going it alone” at a traditional gym. Participants receive individualized support that helps them exercise safely and consistently, which can be especially important for people living with conditions like Parkinson’s disease, MS, post-stroke impacts, spinal cord injuries, and other orthopedic or mobility challenges.

Just as importantly, the program is designed to serve people who may not otherwise have access to wellness support. By combining expert oversight with an inter-professional student team, the center expands capacity while helping train the next generation of healthcare providers in compassionate, whole-person care.

The Bottom Line

The L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center / Supervised Medical Gym brings together physical therapy, exercise physiology, and student teams to help patients with complex medical needs move safely, build strength, and improve health, while expanding access for underserved community members and training future providers.
