The Big Picture

Life doesn’t pause for milestones — but sometimes illness and unexpected medical needs do. For students and families, graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and missing it can feel heartbreaking. Stories of caregivers stepping in to preserve dignity, joy, and connection highlight what compassionate, patient-centered care can look like beyond clinical treatment.

What’s Happening

Spanish Fork High School senior Rylee Allsop couldn’t attend their graduation ceremony after an unexpected surgery left them recovering in the medical-surgical unit at Intermountain Health Spanish Fork Hospital.

Caregivers at the hospital decided Rylee shouldn’t miss the moment. Led by med-surg nurse manager Lacey Miller, hospital president Megan Johnson, and executive assistants Wendy Perkins and Paige Mayer, the team planned a surprise graduation ceremony inside the hospital.

On May 20 — the day after the class formally graduated — family and friends gathered with hospital caregivers in a classroom decorated in Spanish Fork High colors. Rylee was wheeled in to cheers and a surprise celebration.

Administrators from Spanish Fork High School, including principal Matt Christensen, attended and presented Rylee with a diploma. The hospital also presented a commemorative “diploma” to mark Rylee graduating from the hospital through discharge.

Why It Matters

Healthcare is about more than procedures and recovery timelines — it’s also about recognizing the human moments that give people hope and motivation. Small, thoughtful acts can ease stress, support emotional wellbeing, and remind patients and families they’re not alone.

For caregivers, this kind of personalized support reflects a commitment to meeting patients where they are — and to creating positive experiences during difficult circumstances.

The Bottom Line

When an unexpected surgery kept Rylee Allsop from attending graduation, caregivers at Intermountain Health Spanish Fork Hospital brought the ceremony to the hospital — a reminder that compassionate care can help patients hold onto life’s biggest moments, even in the toughest settings.
