The Big Picture

Just two years after opening, Intermountain Health Primary Children’s Hospital — Miller Family Campus in Lehi is already scaling up to meet surging pediatric demand in Utah County and southern Salt Lake County. Built with growth in mind, the campus is expanding inpatient capacity and adding specialty services so more families can get high-level pediatric care closer to home.

What’s Happening

Intermountain Health reports the Lehi campus has cared for tens of thousands of children since opening in 2024, with utilization that underscores how quickly the region’s need has grown:

Nearly 40,000 emergency department visits

More than 145,000 outpatient clinic visits

Over 30,000 patient days

More than 11,000 surgical cases

Over 1,100 trauma cases

To keep pace, the hospital recently added eight new medical-surgical beds. Later this year, six new newborn ICU (NICU) rooms are set to come online—boosting total inpatient capacity by about 20 percent.

The campus is also expanding the scope of specialized care available locally. Hospital leaders point to additions like a chest wall surgery program (including rib cage procedures), a new sports medicine program, and an outdoor sports rehabilitation facility planned for this summer.

Why It Matters

For families in fast-growing communities, expanding capacity isn’t just a milestone—it can be the difference between timely care and long-distance travel in a crisis.

Hospital leaders say the Lehi campus is helping more children access specialty and trauma services closer to where they live, easing the burden on families and reducing time-to-treatment. One example highlighted by the hospital involves a teen who became unstable during an airlift and was rerouted to the Lehi campus—saving critical minutes that may have altered the outcome.

Beyond emergencies, expanded specialty services and rehabilitation options mean kids can often continue follow-up care near home, supporting long-term recovery and helping families avoid repeated trips to other facilities.

The Bottom Line

The Miller Family Campus in Lehi is growing fast because the region’s pediatric needs are growing fast. With new beds online, additional NICU capacity coming soon, and more specialty programs in development, Intermountain Health is positioning the campus to serve as a long-term, scalable hub for pediatric care—bringing more services, sooner, to more families close to home.
