The Big Picture
Utah’s healthcare system serves people with a wide range of needs — including many who want to move more and feel better, but face barriers that make a traditional gym unrealistic. At the L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center / Supervised Medical Gym, University of Utah Health is closing that gap with a dedicated space where people with medical conditions can exercise safely, consistently, and with expert support.
This isn’t fitness for fitness’s sake. It’s healthcare — delivered through movement, coaching, and community.
What’s Happening
The L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center is a collaboration with the University of Utah’s College of Health physical therapy program. Patients referred to the program come in with everything from arthritis and chronic pain to degenerative neurological conditions — and many are simply looking for “an extra set of eyes” as they build strength and confidence.
Inside the gym, physical therapists and exercise physiologists work alongside a team of students to:
- Guide people through safe, structured movement
- Provide close supervision and encouragement
- Teach practical skills people can use long after they leave the program
For participants, the difference is tangible — not just in outcomes, but in the day-to-day experience. As one member put it, having scheduled sessions creates the kind of incentive that turns “I’m too tired today” into “I’ll be there.”
Why It Matters
For many people — especially those who are underserved or lacking resources — consistent exercise support is hard to find. Costs, mobility challenges, and uncertainty about what’s safe can keep people from getting started at all.
This program tackles those obstacles by combining:
- Clinical expertise (PT + exercise physiology)
- Real accountability (scheduled visits and a supportive environment)
- A unique student-powered model that adds energy and hands-on attention
The result is a space that “doesn’t feel like a gym.” It feels like a community — one where people are seen, supported, and equipped to become more independent over time.
The Bottom Line
The L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center / Supervised Medical Gym is redefining what movement-based care can look like: a welcoming, medically informed environment where people with complex health needs can safely build strength and confidence.
By pairing expert guidance with a collaborative student team, the program helps participants show up consistently, overcome barriers, and improve health — not for a few weeks, but for the long haul.
