Intermountain Health is planning a new home for LDS Hospital at 745 South State Street in Salt Lake City. The project would move the hospital from its longtime Avenues location to the former Sears property, placing it closer to major freeways and public transit.
The proposed campus includes a 10-story, 521,000-square-foot hospital and an attached seven-story medical office building. A public plaza is also planned for the site, adding an outdoor gathering area between Main Street and State Street.
Built for changing healthcare needs
The new facility is intended to give patients easier access to a broad range of services in one central location. Plans include emergency and intensive care, women’s and newborn services, behavioral health, cancer care, orthopedics, imaging, surgery and other specialty programs.
Flexible treatment areas and updated technology would allow the hospital to adapt as medical practices and community needs change. The design also includes an atrium and quiet areas for patients, families and caregivers. Energy and water efficiency will be priorities throughout the project.
A major community investment
Intermountain Health estimates that the hospital will support about 2,000 jobs and contribute more than $1.1 billion to the local economy each year. The development would also bring new activity to a property that has been vacant since the Sears store closed in 2018.
Pending final approvals, Intermountain Health hopes to begin construction before the end of 2026. Building the campus is expected to take three to five years.
LDS Hospital has cared for Utah families since 1905. The current Avenues hospital will remain open during development of the new campus. Intermountain Health has not yet decided how the existing property will be used after the move.
