Hospital Safety Is Personal

Why it matters

Intermountain Health earned recognition as one of the nation’s safest health systems in the 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, with 14 hospitals receiving an “A” grade. But the real story isn’t in the numbers, it’s in what those numbers represent.

The big picture

  • Behind every metric is a person. Safety ratings measure performance, but Dr. Cara Camiolo, Intermountain Health’s Chief Quality and Safety Officer, reminds us that “there are humans behind all of that data.”
  • Trust is earned through actions. The recognition reflects a culture where every team member understands they’re caring for someone’s mother, father, sibling, or neighbor.
  • Safety is a mindset, not just a measure. Excellence in hospital safety comes from treating every patient as a loved one.

What they’re saying

“Those folks are entrusting us with their care. And this is personal. Safety is personal.” — Dr. Cara Camiolo

The bottom line

Hospital safety excellence starts with remembering that every patient is someone’s loved one and treating them accordingly.
