Why it matters: University of Utah Health has earned top-tier recognition for the 16th consecutive year, demonstrating sustained excellence in patient care and safety.

The big picture: U of U Health ranked 8th out of 1,220 comprehensive academic medical centers in Vizient’s 2025 Birnbaum Quality Leadership Study, which measures performance across safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, and care variation.

By the numbers:

  • 16 straight years as a national top performer
  • 4th nationally in ambulatory quality and accountability
  • 11th consecutive year in the top 10 for outpatient care

What they’re saying: “We submit data to Vizient every month, and they look at how we perform in taking care of our patients, both in the hospital and in the clinic setting, and compare that to hospitals like us across the country,” says Dr. Kencee Graves, Chief Medical Quality Officer at U of U Health. “At the end of our data submission, we look back and say, where do we have to improve this month? And then we design projects and programs to address things that come up.”

The bottom line: Consistent high performance isn’t luck—it’s culture. U of U Health’s ongoing commitment to teamwork, continuous improvement, and patient-centered care sets a standard for academic medical centers nationwide.
