The big picture: Utah Hospital Association leaders gathered in Sun Valley, Idaho for their Board of Trustees retreat. Key topics included impending Medicaid funding changes and rising workplace violence concerns.

Why it matters: The “Big Beautiful Bill” passed by Congress will bring significant healthcare changes, particularly to Medicaid funding.

In Francis Gibson’s words: “We’re anticipating the worst, preparing for the worst, and hope it’s not that bad. But I think there’s going to be some real cuts in terms of potential services could be offered.”

Between the lines: The retreat provided valuable time for hospital leaders to step away from day-to-day operations and focus on strategic advocacy efforts.

Workplace safety emerged as another critical issue, with Gibson emphasizing: “We want to go to work safe. We want to leave our loved ones at home in a safe manner, and we want to return in a safe manner.”

The bottom line: Gibson says UHA sees its role as bridging the gap between healthcare realities and public understanding, to help “educate the public, help educate decision makers, whether it be health department, whether it be lawmakers” about the real issues affecting Utah’s healthcare system.
