A modern healthcare facility is taking shape in Monticello, replacing Utah’s oldest operational hospital.

Why it matters

San Juan Hospital has served the Monticello community since 1958, but the aging facility is being replaced with a state-of-the-art hospital designed to carry rural healthcare into the future.

“This project is monumental for our organization and our community,” said Clayton Holt, CEO of San Juan Hospital.

The big picture

The $40 million project received significant support from many including Governor Cox, the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, and legislative leadership who recognized the importance of healthcare access in rural Utah.

Construction began in fall 2024 and is scheduled for completion by late 2026, with the hospital becoming fully operational in January 2027.

“The return on investment for that money will be significant as far as providing a place for people to live, be able to live here, to stay here, to grow old here,” Holt said.

What’s next

Construction crews plan to have the structure “dried in” by fall 2025, allowing interior work to continue through winter.

This new facility will bring San Juan Hospital “into the 21st century,” according to Holt, giving caregivers the tools they need to provide quality healthcare for the community for decades to come.
