At Uintah Basin Medical Center, Steve Hansen, Director of Inpatient Pharmacy Services, sees something special in every medication he prepares: possibility.
“There’s magic in every vial,” says Hansen. For rural cancer patients, that magic means receiving the same advanced treatments available in major medical centers, right in their community.
Why it matters: Through innovative telehealth partnerships with Intermountain Health’s oncology team, patients receive personalized care from specialists without disruption to their daily lives.
“We’re seeing the same physicians that they would see at Intermountain facilities. They’re getting the same level of care,” Hansen notes. The only difference? “They get to stay home and be with their families and be with people who know them.”
The big picture: For Hansen, pharmacy isn’t just a profession—it’s a calling to serve his neighbors.
“We’re not just treating patients. We’re treating family, friends, coworkers… people in our community that we know and interact with in every area of our lives.”
What’s next: Hansen and his team continue expanding their capabilities through telehealth technology, bringing specialized care directly to patients.
“Telehealth is changing the healthcare environment,” Hansen explains. “We’re able to provide care that we’ve never been able to provide in rural communities.”
