100 Deadliest Days: Prevention Starts With You

The summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the “100 Deadliest Days” — a period that sees a dramatic spike in preventable injuries.

Primary Children’s Hospital is taking action with prevention education that could save lives this summer.

Why it matters

Summer accidents account for almost half of the trauma volume at Primary Children’s, according to trauma experts.

Behind each statistic is a family whose life can change in an instant — just like it did for one Utah family traveling to Wyoming when they were hit head-on by a car attempting to pass a semi at highway speeds.

“It changes your whole life and your recovery is forever,” shares the mother whose family survived the catastrophic accident. Today, her twin sons are preparing to graduate high school, a milestone the family celebrates with gratitude.

The big picture

While some accidents are unavoidable, many summer injuries can be prevented with simple safety measures:

  • Always wear seatbelts and use proper car seats
  • Be vigilant about water safety
  • Wear helmets during biking, skateboarding, and other activities
  • Stay alert while driving — no texting or distractions
  • Keep a close eye on children around trampolines and playground equipment

Bottom line

“We can’t prevent all injuries but we can prevent a lot of them, which is especially true in children.”

Take charge of your family’s safety this summer.
